Hey guys,

I am an AA URM… I do well in school and I have a 4.0…I’ve always really just worked hard (When I needed) and done well. In the last year or so I’ve been checking out TLS and learning more about LS, before this I did not know about the whole URM advantage (to the same extent). I would ideally like to attend HYS. However, I feel a bit odd about it because if I get in I will feel like it is only because I am a URM. I am pretty confident I can score 170+ on the LSAT with diligent studying. I think because of this I am going to aim for a score that would have gotten me into the schools of my choice regardless of my URM status. Something about being favored on the basis of just my race doesn’t sit right with me.

Any thoughts from other URMs on this?

I understand the sentiment, but law school is a huge gamble. You need every advantage you can, buddy. Good luck on your cycle.

Chief, there will be a million times in life where you are fucked over by circumstances you can’t control. When life throws you a bone, you take it and be thankful. That’s the classy thing to do.

If you want to feel better about it you can look at it as a collective issue. I am a white guy and if AA was only about giving certain individuals an advantage I would be against it because it would seem unfair to me. But I also see it as important to have all types of people represented in important and visible positions because it sends a good message to others that they can get there too, and it sends a positive message of integration to everybody in society.

For every one of us that URM selectiveness helps, there are at least 10 others who are sh***ed on for that same reason in other aspects of life. Take it with grace and move on.

@RedFactor… Can’t argue with that logic! Yeah, that’s probably true, however, I’ve been reading through the forum and found out URM’s with 162-163 and 3.5 can get into most T-14 minus Y? At least this cycle…Just seems like the standards are lowering?

Redfactor… I do feel like a URM is most likely at a disadvantage for the actual Post-LS opportunities… However, I think we should try to fix it because I don’t understand the logic to begin with. URMs typically score lower: So heres a solution… Just seems a bit unsound. In any case, I think this problem is more about my pride and I guess if it is what’s best I will have to let it down. Not the biggest deal

I wasn’t talking about school… I didn’t elaborate. That’s not what I was trying to imply.

Oh OP, your problems are so legit. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

3.92? You’ll be fine.

I’m a URM as well and I can understand why you feel the way you do. But, you obviously have a great GPA so don’t feel as though your URM status was the only reason you got accepted. Look at it as an opportunity to get into a great school and continue to work hard.

Stuckinthemiddle…I hear ya man, wasn’t a problem, like I said I felt a little odd. And I said it was ultimately a pride issue & not a big deal. I was just reaching out to see how other URMs felt…

Nothing wrong with that view, thank you!

OP-

It is awesome that you compared URM status to a DH in baseball. I love it!

Also, I’m in the same boat as you and have thought that way at times, but I figure I will use what I can to my advantage. An opportunity is an opportunity.
